Online Webinar

The search for sites predating 13,500 BP is one of the biggest and most controversial challenges facing archaeologists in the Americas today. Discussions around this topic have been polarized since early discoveries at sites like Folsom and Blackwater Draw. In this talk, Dr. Asher highlights contributions from Blackwater Draw (the Clovis type-site) to our current understanding of Clovis adaptations, and reviews key paradigm shifts in research pertaining to the peopling of the Americas. Dr. Asher summarizes evidence from select sites predating the Clovis time period and reflects on his own experiences working at a handful of sites throughout the Great Plains with pre-Clovis potential.

Brendon P. Asher is the Director of the Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark and Museum in Portales, New Mexico, and an Associate Professor in Anthropology at Eastern New Mexico University. With 25 years of archaeological experience primarily within the Great Plains region, his interests focus on land use studies of prehistoric groups revolving around lithic procurement practices and lithic transportation and use, as well as prehistoric subsistence strategies and butchering practices. As the Director of the Clovis type-site, he is also interested in discussions of the early peopling of the Americas and has worked at several pre-Clovis sites throughout the Plains region.

This webinar is suitable for lifelong learners from high school students to adults; this lesson is free.
