The Phiogeh site (LA 144) is a Classic Period Tewa village located in the northern Espanola Valley north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The site has not been extensively investigated and has garnered only limited attention from researchers. Yet, the site is very important as an ancestral site to Ohkay Owingeh as well as having potential links to the Arizona Tewa which settled at Hopi. The site was occupied during the AD 1400s and into the 1500s, but there remains some confusion over when the site was physically abandoned with some sources suggesting just prior to the arrival of Spanish rule in AD 1598 and other sources suggesting abandonment following the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The site was occupied at a crucial time of first contact. It also has potential to change the way we think about Pueblo agricultural practices in the region as well as expanding on the concept of Pueblo “community,” as Patrick proposes that Phiogeh might have been part of a larger integrated agricultural and social network that tied multiple villages together in cooperation. This talk is a preliminary look at the Phiogeh site as part of a dissertation project that is in progress.

The webinar is suitable for lifelong learners from high school students to adults.  The lesson is free.
