Archaeology Research Program: Session I

September 4th to 8th, 2023

Hawkins Preserve Survey: Learn archaeological site survey and recording techniques, and work alongside our archaeologists to help them to identify and analyze ancient and historic artifacts in our archaeology lab and in the field.

Program Description:

Join an Archaeological Survey at the Hawkins Preserve, a 122-acre natural area located just south of Cortez, Colorado. The preserve includes numerous Ancestral Pueblo habitations (Pueblo I–III periods) that are part of the Mitchell Springs Group, one of the largest community centers in Southwest Colorado. In addition, you’ll document several historic sites associated with Ute and Navajo occupation, as well as the earliest Euro-American settlers in the area. Your contributions as a citizen scientist will add to our understanding of the archaeological record within the preserve and enhance our knowledge of the Prehispanic and Historic occupations in the Mesa Verde region.

The cost of the program is:

$1,025 for Option #1: Tuition only, or

$1,800 for Option #2: Tuition plus lodging and meals provided by Crow Canyon.

Transportation to and from Cortez Municipal Airport or Durango Regional Airport available at additional costs.
